Today Is World Goth Day. Connect with your inner Goth
After the demise of the Punk movement (OK some Punk bands survived eg Green Day), there was a new subculture that sprung up in England in the 1980’s named “Goth”.
The Cure were a Goth styled post-punk band whose lyrics were often rather dark. Another group of the same era is Siouxsie and the Banshees.
This Goth subculture is not only present in music, but also the way people dress and the style of makeup used by both genders.
Musically Goth’s prefer death metal, new wave and gothic rock.
Perhaps surprisingly the group “The Doors” are these days thought of as a Gothic Rock band.
The lead singer of the doors, Jim Morrison, who was also a poet, is remembered as a troubled man who became addicted to alcohol and died at the young age of 27.
The actual cause of his death is unknown.
The Goth movement gains inspiration from various areas such as B movies, vampire cults, and dark science films such as Blade Runner.
They are also inspired by Gothic architecture.
There is a genre of fiction writing combining romance with dark elements creating a story that encompasses terror, horror, the supernatural etc.
These books are often set in gloomy surroundings like graveyards or the ruins of castles or catherdrals.
Today is also Sherlock Holmes Day and Maritime Day.
