Second Chance Or Mulligan Day

People across the world are asking for a second chance right now. You may have been weak and are now asking your partner to trust you.

You might be standing in the court pleading with the judge to give you another go.

Everyone deserves a second chance in life. But that luxury comes with a proviso. It is a simple but sometimes difficult one.

You must change your ways. Permanently. This is the only way that the new opportunity to make good is worth having.

Today is also “Take Your Parents To Lunch Day”.

Sure, there is Mothers Day and Fathers day, but these are separate occasions. Taking your parents to lunch is a nice way to surprise them and show that you love them.

Lunch is too expensive? OK, take them for a coffee and cookie.

Still too expensive? Buy a cake mix. Bake the cake and take it round to them for afternoon tea. You brew the tea or coffee. After all, it is supposed to be a treat.

Global Hand Washing Day

Today Is Global Hand Washing Day

It has been estimated that one in five people do not wash their hands. While another estimate puts it as some 62 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women do not wash their hands after using the toilet.

Yet another estimate says that a total of 95 per cent of people do not wash their hands well enough to kill bacteria.

Those little bowls of salted nuts or pretzels at the bar are put there to increase your thirst and thus designed to make you drink more beer.

But have you considered just how many microscopic bacteria you swallow with each handful? Given that it is almost guaranteed that someone has dipped their hand into that bowl after having visited the toilets, it is rather a lot.

Avoid the temptation. Eating them will only make you thirstier and can possibly expose you to gross bacteria and make you sick.

If you really need a snack, buy a whole pack for yourself.

World Egg Day

Today Is World Egg Day

Why do we need a World Egg Day? Apart from being one of the oldest foods around, eggs are involved in religious beliefs.

The Catholic religion uses the humble egg as a symbol of the stone sealing the internment space of Christ after the Crucifixion. The belief goes something like this: On the third day after death, the stone was rolled away by an unseen force allowing Christ to exit the tomb and ascend into heaven.

Judaism

In the Jewish religion, eggs are viewed somewhat differently.

The egg still represents the rolling away of the stone but it also represents the circle of life, freedom and servitude and joy and suffering.

Along with eggs,  lentils and bagels, plus other round foods are consumed in the ritual meal “Seder” which is a meal of condolence. The hard-boiled egg pays homage to the temples destruction.

Hinduism.

In this religion, there is a small sector that believes the unfertilised egg is  “Rajasic”, meaning that the eater will be overstimulated leading to an immoral, unfit state of mind.*

Myself, I love eggs with bacon, or scrambled, especially with cheese. I had a chook pen in my last home and hope to get one here too. Fresh eggs from your own chickens are way better than any shop bought eggs including the free range ones.

Notable Events For October

Events For October 2018

Here is a list of events for October that are worthy of your attention.

Mental Health Month

Mental health is something many of you would like to ignore. But it can no longer be ignored. Mental Health affects all of us. There are days throughout the year when we are reminded of this terrible affliction, such as RUOK Day. But we should be looking out for each other on a daily basis. For instance, if you see bullying at school, go to the office and report it. The child being bullied is probably too scared to do so.

Pizza Month

October is also pizza month. Why not do something outrageous? Order a real pizza for a change. A real pizza should have a thin crispy base and be topped with tomato sauce, onion, mushroom, capsicum, ground beef, oregano and mozzarella cheese.

It should not have things like a stuffed crust, fried egg, custard etc on it.

Family History Month

This is also the month for researching your family history. There are several sites out there to help you with this. Ancestry dot com is the most advertised. Just search genealogy and you will find lots of resources.

Fair Trade Month

Live dangerously. Try fair trade products for a change. Fairtrade products are items that have usually been sourced from developing countries. The fair trade program helps those countries to become more economically viable in the world trade markets.

Today is also banana lovers day.

The humble banana is a fabulous source of energy because they have loads of potassium.

They are also considered to be the “feel good” fruit as they have chemicals in them that help the body produce serotonin. They can also aid in lowering blood pressure. Called a fruit, they are actually classed as a berry.
