Christmas Shopping On A Budget

This Christmas is shaping up to be the most expensive ever. I believe that you can celebrate Christmas without spending a small fortune.

The marketing gurus would have you thinking that you must buy expensive gifts. TV advertisements are continually telling you that you are getting a bargain Christmas present when you buy a “smart” $250 soundbar as a gift for the man in your life.

I think this is terrible. The adverts make you feel that if you do not spend hundreds of dollars on each gift you buy, you are being stingy.

Sure, you can use services like afterpay to enable you to spend money you do not yet have. And that is the whole problem in a nutshell. Say, for example, I buy the soundbar for $250 on afterpay. $50 now and 4 monthly payments of $50.

That means that just that one purchase at Christmas puts me in debt for a further four months.  When you or I do this, we tend to forget that there are perhaps two birthdays between Christmas and the end of April. Will you have cash on hand to buy these birthday gifts as well as meet your afterpay commitments?

Your friends and family do not want to see you struggle with debt. I am sure a true friend would much prefer that you spend only what you have available, and not put yourself needlessly in debt.

The joy of giving is just as good, if not better, when you have peace of mind that you will not have to tighten your belt after Christmas.

Christmas Tree

I think the best places to buy Christmas Trees this year are, Kmart, Target and Big W. I heard that Big W are reducing all their Christmas trees to half price this Thursday.

What do you think? Would Christmas be more enjoyable and less stressful if it was done without any debt?
