Nuclear Bombs Exploded At Bikini Atoll

Nuclear Bombs

There were 22 nuclear bombs exploded at Bikina Atoll with devastating effects.

What is an atoll?

Atoll is a word used to describe a ring shaped coral reef. The word itself, taken from what the Mayalalam peaople call the Maldive Islands, is “atolu.”

But a true atoll is not like the Maldives. An atoll is a circular coral reef system formed at the peak of an underwater extinct volcano.

At Bikini Atoll is a chain of coral islands. Situated in the central Pacific Ocean, nuclear bombs detonated there created massive craters. Destruction caused by detonation of the bombs has now been revealed by scientists.

The first nuclear bomb test, codenamed “Baker,” was detonated underwater in July 1946. In a milliesecond, a 274 metre wide column of sand, pulverised coral and water shot to 1.6 kilometres in the air. 22 of these bombs were detonated between 1946 and 1958.

What we do not know is what the long term effects of such actions will be. It is clear that the coral was destroyed alongside unknown amounts of sea life. Does exploding nuclear devices in this way contaminate the ocean?

I beleive it must. Does this mean then that we eat seafood? You tell me.

Back to the atoll. The US bombs have caused two enormous craters in the sea bed. These craters cover an area around 1.5 times the size of New Yorks Central Park. They have now been measured accurately to a depth of 56 metres.

Detonating a bomb that causes that much devastation must have ramifications.

We know that Earth has seven tectonic plates. We also know that these plates are always moving. So what other harm has the testing of nuclear bombs at sea done?

Has it caused the fault lines that existed to lengthen?

Has it altered the height or angle of the Pacific plate? Not having the technology in the 1940’s to measure as we do now, who can say?

So 70 years on and we are still testing nuclear weapons. North Korea, for example, does it.

Will we never learn?

France also used atolls in it’s atomic bomb tests.

Bushfires Wage War As Scott Morrison Forces evacuees To Shake His Hand

Bushfires Wage War

I saw Scott Morrison on a Channel 7 broadcast forcing a woman to shake his hand as the bushfires wage war on NSW. The lady was an evacuee and obviously distraught. ScoMo held out his right hand and then using his left hand he took hold of the lady’s right arm bringing her hand up to his which he then grasped and shook vigorously while muttering some banal sentence to her.

The Australian people do not want him intruding on their grief. Nor do they want him taking up valuable resources (fire-fighters) by touring stricken towns and talking to exhausted men and women.

The bushfires wage war

This is no ordinary bushfire event. It is a war. Wars are won by strategy. So what we need is for the head of our government to sit down with experts in fire prevention and control in order to develop a national plan that can be activated to fight fire. I do not know what could have or still be done. That is up to our leaders.

We certainly need to carry out more controlled burns in the cooler months. There is an enormous amount of bush out there that is fuelled by dry undergrowth and leaves that are full of oils. A tinderbox.

We do not have enough fire-fighters to battle these bushfires. So lobby the government to have our armed forces trained in fighting bushfires.

Equip the army with fire-fighting equipment.

They could have fire engines on standby for the times that regular firemen and volunteer firemen are struggling.

Out air force could have their helicopters equipped with removable fire-fighting equipment. this would hive us many more Helitacks.

Some people say that we should not burn our forests because of the amount of wildlife that will be in danger.

What I say to that is that the forest or bush areas in our country are designed to burn periodically. This generates fresh growth and aids in the germination of some species whose seeds will not sprout until a fire has gone through that area.

While I love wildlife from lizards to koalas etc, I would rather see some losses there than those we are now experiencing.

The Business Of Being An Artist Painting For Profit

Being An Artist Or Painting For Profit

The business of being an artist and painting for profit is an odd one. You would not normally associate the two. I hope you find the pointers or suggestions made here useful.  After all, you do want to sell your artworks. Running your craft as a business should only take up a small portion of your time. But you must be dedicated to it.

Planning Your Art Business

A business plan is usually developed to raise cash for the venture. Perhaps by a bank loan or some other lending institution. Artists find this type of cash subsidy hard to obtain. I would never recommend borrowing money anyway.

Painting For Profit

Can you create or use more than one outlet or method to sell your art?

Look at your biggest competitor and ask yourself if you can utilize some of their methods.

Analyse your competitor as much as possible and identify what is wrong or right with their techniques for selling

Can you give some sort of added value to your art?

What will you sell? Completed art, commissioned art, or both?

Work out your start up costs right down to the last dollar. That is, be realistic in your calculations.

Where do you plan your business to be in 10 years?

Back to costs. Where will you get the money?

Work out an estimate of what you realistically expect to make over the year to come.

Will you need to register for GST?

Skills for running your business

Keep your goals firm. Do not be tempted to set them higher just because it looks nice to have a raging success in the first year.

You do not need to be a whizz at numbers to succeed, basic arithmetic is obviously important as you will need to plan a budget or at least keep track of your cash flow.

Be organized. You take your art seriously, so treat your business the same way.

Marketing

Write yourself an artists statement. Tell people what inspires you or what your art is meant to convey or which feelings it should evoke.

When photographing your art for sale, use the best quality camera you can, avoid distracting backgrounds or reflections or shadows on the artwork.

Make sure your photo is focused properly! If it is blurry it will appear to prospective buyers that you just do not care.

If you have hired a photographer to take pro images, make sure that he has signed over the copyright of the photo to you. That prevents him from using the image for his own purposes.

Lastly, keep an archive of work you have sold.

largest iceberg ever

The Largest Iceberg Ever!

largest iceberg ever

Reference Photo

Is This The Largest Iceberg Ever?

Caused by a fracture in the Brunt Ice Shelf, Antartica, the largest iceberg ever is about to break away from the ice pack.

The Halley research station which located the hole in the ozone layer had to be re-located due to the cracking on the ice shelf (which creates the iceberg). The iceberg is estimated as twice the size of New York city.

How can the Morrison government ignore global warming (climate change) given the devastation caused by the ongoing bushfires in the East plus we now have the formation of the largest iceberg ever right on our doorstep.

the widows blade

Novel Excerpt By Hamish McKenna

A Novel Excerpt From ‘The Widows Blade’ By Hamish McKenna

This novel excerpt is by kind courtesy of Hamish McKenna.

Kathleen unlocked the door and entered calling out to her sons, “I’m back boys, come and get breakfast.” As the boys did not answer she assumed they were in the back garden.

Kathleen started towards the kitchen. She was horrified by the sight that met her. She dropped the shopping in shock.

NOVEL EXCERPT

Both her boys were tied to kitchen chairs with silver duct tape with more tape across their mouths. There was a man behind each of the boys, “Hello Kathleen,” said the one on the left through a chilling smile.

Kathleen dragged her eyes away from the pleading tear-streaked faces of her children, “Wh what do you want?” stammered Kathleen hoping against hope that these were simply burglars, though in her heart she knew that was not the case.

“You can run away but we will always find you.”

The other man ran a menacing finger across Bens throat while the first man continued, “We know you have been talking to the police. The next time you speak to them you will say the your boys got it wrong. They really cant say who they saw, or what they saw. They have very active imaginations and all that.”

His accomplice had produced a knife from somewhere and was holding the blade next to Bens throat.

“Understand?”

“Yes,” answered Kathleen quietly.

The one on the right had now cut Bens ear and blood was pouring down the side of his head soaking his t-shirt.

“UNDERSTAND?”

“Yes, Yes!”

Both men quietly brushed past Kathleen as they walked to the front door, “Have a nice holiday,” came the sarcastic remark as they exited the house.
