Today Is Hug Your Cat Day

Today Is Hug Your Cat Day, except for allergy sufferers

today is

The Egyptian Mau is most likely the oldest breed of cat. The breed is so old that the meaning of it’s name is Egyptian for cat.

If you buy a a cat from a shelter, expect to pay anything from $100 to $250. A cat from a commercial breeder would be between $500 and $1200.

Going right to the other end of the spectrum , someone had their cat “Little Nicky”cloned for $50,000.

hug your cat

Regardlesss of the cost of the breeds, there is a good case for adopting a cat rather than going to a breeder.

Watch any episode of RSPCA Rescue and you will see the plight of the cats that they rescue from often squalid conditions.

All these cats are checked for health, behaviour issues, treated for worms, fleas, ticks and de-sexed.

So the fee charged to adopt is really not likely to yield much profit to the RSPCA.

Remember that any pet is for life. You must devote some time to it daily. The love you will get in return is invaluable.

Today is also Sherlock Holmes Day and Maritime Day.

Today Is Repeat Day

Today Is Repeat Day. And I Don't Mean Groundhog Day.

repeat day

If there has ever been something you enjoyed doing so much that you wished you could just keep doing it, this is the day to celebrate and get back out to your own favourite thing and repeat, repeat, repeat. You get the idea.

Perhaps you are into extreme things like bungy jumps, or maybe you enjoyed walking up to the top of the lighthouse?

If sunsets are your thing then hop down to the beach, river or lake and watch the sun go down over the calming waters repeating the view by reflection.

repeat day

Perhaps surprisingly the group “The Doors” are these days thought of as a Gothic Rock band.

The lead singer of the doors, Jim Morrison, who was also a poet, is remembered as a troubled man who became addicted to alcohol and died at the young age of 27.

The actual cause of his death is unknown.

Today Is Also Cancer Survivors Day

The world of medicine is always advancing in it’s search for cancer cures and to locate the gene that causes it.

surviving cancer

Cancer has, or is likely to, touch the lives of every generation that lives. I can name three people involved in my life in one way  or another that have died due to cancer.

And I am sure if I thought even a little more that number would go up.

surviving cancer

Surviving cancer is not easy. The patient has to undergo various treatments that often include chemotherapy. They will probably lose weight as well as their hair. Plus the sickness that comes with this treatment.

It is, in part,  because there are so many different types of cancer, that scientists feel that they are always on an uphill battle.

Surviving cancer is not a matter of simply being treated, or having it cut out.

I feel that those who have survived cancer are also very strong mentally. They have an inner strength that carries them through the nightmare and allows them to make the journey back to some sort of normal life.

So if you are a cancer survivor, You deserve all the good things that life can can give you. If you are cash poor but dream rich, perhaps let everyone know what you have always wanted to do but never had the chance. Instead of several small gifts at Christmas, or whatever event you celebrate, they can all unite and give you that dream.

Regardless of everything else, you are a cancer survivor and should be very proud of yourself.

Today Is Rocky Road Day

Do you like Rocky Road? Well today is Rocky Road Day, so your luck is in.

rocky road

No, sorry, not the four wheel drive track type of rocky road. Rather, I mean edible Rocky Road.

rocky road

Rocky Road was invented in Australia way back in 1853. Actually classed as a dessert, it is more often eaten as a snack.

There is also a version of Rocky Road that is an ice cream.

Rocky Road Recipe

Ingredients

    110g packet slivered almonds

    2/3 cup shredded coconut

250g pack pink and white marshmallows

    180g packet raspberry lollies

115g pack mini oreo bite size cookies

500g good dark chocolate, roughly chopped

Method

    Step 1

Preheat oven to 180C or 160C fan. Lightly grease a 28cm x 18cm (base measurement) slice pan and line with non-stick baking paper. Spread almonds on a baking tray and bake for 3 mins, or until lightly golden. Transfer to a plate to cool.

    Step 2

Meanwhile, place coconut in a dry frying pan and stir over medium heat for 1-2 mins, or until lightly golden. Transfer to a plate to cool.

    Step 3

Combine almonds, coconut, marshmallows, lollies and cookies in a large bowl.

    Step 4

Place chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (make sure the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water). Stir until chocolate has melted. Remove bowl from the pan.

    Step 5

Pour melted chocolate over the marshmallow mixture. Using a rubber spatula, mix until evenly combined. Scrape marshmallow mixture into the prepared pan and spread out evenly. Place in the fridge for 20 mins to set.

    Step 6

Lift rocky road out of the pan and cut into 24 squares.

The recipe here should yield about 24 serves.

You can change the lolly ingredients around to your taste.

rocky road

And that is Rocky Road.

Totally unhealthy, but emminently enjoyable.

Today Is Global Day of Parents Day

Today Is Global Day of Parents Day.You deserve it.

Global Parents Day

Yes, today is Global Day Of Parents Day. We, as parents, take on a huge responsibility from the moment we decide to start a family.

Learning to be aprent starts as soon as conception occurs. The partner bearing the child has to potentially suffer morning sickness and her partner will likely get a crash course on hormones.

From the moment the child is born, both parents start worrying (not that they weren’t during the pregnancy).

You will both spend more time than you realise thinking about what awaits your child as he grows up. Where will he go to kindy, pre school, school, high and school. Then comes Tafe or Uni or the workforce.

Often, the aspirations you have for your child fail to come to fruition. Do not blame yourself or each other. Every individual is actually individual and unique.

Global Day Of Parents

Then comes driving. Just something else to worry about. Sure, your child is sensible and would never hoon. But what about all the loons that are on the road?

Global Day Of Parents

Lets not forget about your parents too. Even though you are an adult woryying about your own childrens welfare, your parents will continue to be concerned not only for you, but for their grandchild too.

Global Day Of Parents

So hats off to the generations of parents, grandparents and great grandparents. You should all give each other a pat on the back.

World No Tobacco Day

Today Is World No Tobacco Day. A great day to improve your lot in life.

World No Tobacco Day

The World Health Oganisation has declared My 31st as World No Tobacco Day.

Like it says in the infographic, over 2 million deaths from cardiovascular disease worldwide every year.

So why is there an upsurge in Shisha?

We are about to get a Shisha bar in Bunbury.

For those of you who do not know, Shisha involves the smoking of flavoured tobacco from a hookah.

world no tobacco day

The tobacco is smoked through liquid. I am nor sure why it is done like this. Seems to me a bit like smoking marjuauna (something I do not do!).

Smoking tobacco in this way does not prevent the intake of nicotine.

Nicotine is what people who cant give up cigarettes are addicted to.

world no tobacco day

So you can see that smoking a hookah is every bit as bad for your health as smoking cigarettes is.

Dont turn yourself into a statistic. Give up smoking altogether, your GP can help with that.

And please, please, do not try the hookah. Not even once, or even one puff.
