Today Is Meteor Day

On meteor day take the time out to look up at our beautiful Milky Way.

Meteors are more common than you might think. Our skies are constantly being bombarded with debris from asteroids. Some are quite large lumps of

rubbish, but chances are the meteor, or shooting star, that you see will be, at best, the size of a pea but more likely the size of a grain of sand!

Oddly, there is not much meteor activity in June anywhere in the sky.

July sees an active meteor shower: July 27-28, 2018 Delta Aquariids ,visible in both the Southern Hemisphere and the Northern Hemisphere.

The maximum rate can reach 15-20 meteors per hour in a dark sky. You will probably need to get out of the city to see them as light pollution is an astronomers enemy, along with rain, clouds etc, etc.

Today Is Pineapple Day

Today Is Pineapple Day

Why have a Pineapple Day? Because Pineapples are a very versatile fruit when it comes to desserts and drinks. A quick search for pineapple recipes will reveal at least thirty.

Colombus first encountered pineapples in Guadeloupe in 1493. The first pineapples were brought to Australia by German missionaries who had spent time in India before traveling to Australia.

Pineapples are readily available these day’s anywhere in the tropics but are more seasonally available in higher latitudes. Celebrate Pineapple Day with a Pina Colada, recipe below.

This day in 1954 also saw the first Nuclear power station be commissioned in Moscow.

60ml white rum

30ml coconut cream

90ml pineapple juice

20ml simple syrup

15ml lime juice

Pinapple wedge

6 ice cubes

Blend and strain into a chilled glass.

Today Is Chocolate Pudding Day

Today Is Chocolate Pudding Day

Yes today is Chocolate Pudding Day. As far as I am concerned, whoever first thought of making a chocolate pudding dessert deserves a Nobel Prize.

From cakes that are layered like this one to one of today’s modern Lava cakes, they are all totally scrumptious.

Other events for today:

The twin-rotor Focke-Wulf Fw 61 took to the air for the first time in 1936. It was the world’s first practical helicopter.

1730 saw the birth of Charles Messier. He was known for his charting and naming of stars (celestial bodies). He published a catalogue of one hundred and one Messier Objects in 1771.

The first to be observed by Messier was the remnant of a supernova explosion known as the Crab Nebula (M1) shown here.

Today Is Global Beatles Day

Today Is Global Beatles Day

Beatles Day is a celebration of the Fab Four. Four young Liverpuddlians who took the music world by storm with Love Me Do.

Everybody has a favourite Beatles song. It could be Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields, Hard Days Night, Norwegian Wood, Revolution or Please Please Me. Then Hey Jude, Lady Madonna, Sargeant Pepper and countless more.

The Beatles started a revolution in the world of music. They played to packed houses worldwide, were the first group to be met at airports by hordes of screaming, adoring fans.

Others have come close, but they have never been surpassed.

Today also marks Custers last stand at the Battle Of The Little Big Horn.

George Michael was born on this day in 1963.

Also, on this day in 1947, the Diary Of Anne Frank was published. She was a Jewish girl who hid from the Nazi’s in World War Two.

Her diary chronicles how she survived in hiding for 25 months before the Gestapo found her.

That was over two years without ever being able to go outside and breathe fresh air. She died at age 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Today Is Fairy Day

Fairy Day Is Here!

Fairy Day is a day for celebrating an enchanted world of wonder.

Fairies in the garden. Little homes under toadstools. Magic Fairy Dust that can brighten the dullest of days.

If you are the parent of a young, possibly precocious lady, then today is the day to embrace your inner child and get your star tipped wand out.

Have some fun with your child and let your imagination run wild. You will feel all the better for it.

On more serious note

Today is also the anniversary of the day in 1982 when a British Airways flight ran into serious difficulty.

The Boeing 747 had all four engines fail at the same time. A total flame-out.

The plane had flown straight into a cloud of volcanic ash thrown up by Mount Galunggung near Indonesia.

One clear of the ash cloud, no doubt after scaring everyone on board, the pilot managed to get the engines re-started and the flight landed safely in Jakarta.

This was also the date when in 1901, Pablo Picasso opened his first ever exhibition in Paris.
